Surge Strategy Borrows From Bush Argument
The Obama administration, faced with mounting Congressional criticism, is trying to build support for its new Afghan strategy by explicitly linking the planned escalation to the Bush administration’s 2007 Iraq surge.
Adm. Mike Mullen, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, told the Senate panel the new strategy was designed to create “breathing space” for the Afghans, the exact phrase the Bush administration used to describe its goals for the Iraq surge.
The Obama administration’s appropriation of the surge comes as a surprise, given that then-Sen. Barack Obama was one of the policy’s leading Senate critics.
